Kate & Holly: The Beginning
Timber Ridge Riders

by Maggie Dana

FREE
September 7 - December 31, 2015

If you’ve ever wondered what Kate’s and Holly’s lives were like before they met at Timber Ridge, this short introduction spills all the details!

* * *

Fourteen-year-old Kate McGregor has trouble making friends. In exchange for her riding lessons, she works at Sandpiper Stables where the other girls look down their noses at her as she mucks stalls, cleans tack, and grooms their European warmbloods.

For comfort, Kate turns to Black Magic, the barn’s best horse. His favorite treat is watermelon rinds, which he slobbers all over her. But Kate doesn’t care. She loves Magic’s attention and pampers him. Together, they're already making a name for themselves at three-day events, and Kate’s riding instructor predicts they will go far . . . until a tragic accident changes everything.

* * *

Holly Chapman hides her sadness and loneliness behind a cheerful smile. She grooms as much of her horse, Magician, as she can reach from her wheelchair and watches another girl ride him—winning the blue ribbons that Holly used to win.

Determined to keep up with the other kids, even if she can’t walk, Holly takes risks. She gets her wheelchair stuck in the mud, stranded on stairs, and wedged into corners. Sometimes she falls out of it. Her mother advertises for a summer companion, but Holly doesn’t want a watchdog.

She wants a best friend.

September 11-15, 2015

Recipient of the 2013 Kart Kids Book List Award

A humorous, animal detective story for 7-12 year-olds.

“When Mr Woodland Mouse mysteriously disappears, Constable Mole is quick to enlist the help of Leon Chameleon, Private Investigator, whose expertise enabled the Pigeon Valley Police to solve the case of the missing canary eggs.

After organising a search, Leon realises that there is only one creature in the valley who can spring the captured mouse from his prison. But just when he thinks Mr Woodland Mouse is safely on his way home, the plan goes horribly wrong...”

All the animal details of food, habits, and lifestyle are true to nature (apart from Constable Mole’s sunglasses!) and the animals solve the crimes using their own natural abilities. Children will absorb much knowledge of the small creatures of Africa without being aware of it.

A section of interesting facts has been added to this second detective story in the Leon Chameleon PI series. It provides valuable and little-known information on chameleons, moles and other creatures featured in the story.

B or How the Bogeyman Didn't Save Christmas

B or How the Bogeyman Didn't Save Christmas

by Jessie Talbot

$2.99
Just 99 cents!
September 11-15, 2015

It’s Halloween and Santa Claus (a bit early) is in trouble again. For once, Mrs. Claus can’t get him out! It’s up to the Bogeyman to save the right jolly old elf, the North Pole, three innocent families, and Christmas itself in his own fantastic way. Or, y’know, not...

I love Christmas specials but Santa Claus is often portrayed as being a bit arrogant. He’s either over-confident or he’s off sulking for some reason or other. That gave me an idear. So! What if Santa literally made a huge mistake? Who will our hero be? The Bogeyman of course. B doesn’t work alone, three families are also deeply affected and they all, children and parents, have an adventure as they rush to set things right.

I had such fun writing this. It was important to me to create a story and have it be funny, fantastical, and all-inclusive. I’m told it’s scary, too, but I think it’s no more scary than any other children’s book. Which means it might be very scary indeed. Oops. BUT it’s not cynical or 'edgy' (oh, I hate that word.) It’s the holiday special I’ve always wanted to see. Enjoy!

Description

Eleven year-old Drew Montgomery has not, does not, and will not ever want a stupid old rabbit. All they do is sit in their cages, eat carrots, and poop. Then his annoying little sister blackmails him into hiding a bunny in his closet. She knows what really happened to his “stolen” bike and she’s threatening to tell. Now Drew’s in a real jam. If his “No pets!” parents find the rabbit or, worse, his sister blabs the truth, he’ll be grounded till grade seven for sure.

And if that’s not enough trouble, two girls at school drag him into a prank war that goes from bad to worse--and it’s all the rabbit’s fault. Plus, the weirdest girl in his class wants to be his science partner. If she tells him she wants to be his girlfriend, he just knows he’s gonna die.

Drew must find a way to outwit the mean girls, wiggle out of the blackmail deal, and get rid of the rabbit before it destroys his bedroom and his life.
